Power of the Bike Design Challenge

Download the Power of the Bike Challenge materials, a design project for school pupils and community groups on how to release the power of the bike.

Overview

We are excited to announce the launch The Power of the Bike – 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships design challenge.

This is a free resource that is available to all schools and community groups, and is recommended for ages 9 and up.

What is it?

The Power of the Bike Challenge is a creativity and design project that looks for innovative ideas and solutions to release the power of the bike for us all.

We want pupils and community groups to work as teams to develop their own creative ideas and products to make cycling better.

Taking part in the challenge will develop creativity and STEM skills, encourage pupils to look afresh at where they live and, importantly, have fun!

Education Scotland Event

Getting more people on bikes every day is an aim of the UCI Cycling World Championships and in June, this goal was a key motivator for school children from across Scotland, as they gathered in Glasgow at the Emirates Arena, and site of one of the key venues of the Championships, the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome.

The Education Scotland Hack event brought schools from across Scotland to participate in a Power of the Bike design challenge, and undertake both a tour of the Emirates Arena, undertaking activities such as bike maintenance, pedal challenges and road safety.

Pitching their designs to the panel of “Dragons”, the challenge had the teams show a video of their innovative ideas and then answer questions of their design to persuade the panel.

The panel comprised of Lee Craigie, Ambassador for Active Travel, Scottish Government, Rachael Mckechnie, Deputy Director, Creative Futures and Major Events Scottish Government, Luthais Arthur, Track Cyclist for Glasgow Track Racing Club and Stuart Turner, Chief Operating Officer, UCI Cycling World Championships.
