The Champs as a catalyst for change

Organisers of the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships have been fully committed to maximising the platform of this inaugural global event as a catalyst for change in this area, and delivering an event that has inclusion at its core, through its Pledge to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI).

With a partner led approach, alongside our delivery partners, we have dedicated ourselves to think outside the box and identify where the greatest impact could be made. For example we produced Planning for Inclusion Guidelines for each of the event delivery partners to work through as part of the build planning.

There were 25 elements to this including sensory bags and having period products at all venues to address period poverty and remove stigma. Community mapping was also part of these guidelines to help event delivery partners identify local community groups to work with helping reach new audiences, one of these being the deaf cycling community at Glentress - a first in cycling.

Our partner, Scottish Cycling were proactive in ensuring that their activation programmes around the event targeted women and girls and saw impressive results with participation levels.

We are proud to be a Finalist for a Herald & GenAnalytics Diversity Award, recognising the impact made by the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships by having equality, diversity and inclusion at the heart of this first of its kind event.

Trudy Lindblade, CEO of the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships said:

“We are proud to be a Finalist for a Herald & GenAnalytics Diversity Award, recognising the impact made by the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships by having equality, diversity and inclusion at the heart of this first of its kind event.

By joining the Pledge, participants dedicated their organisations to actively make a positive difference to the lives of others by harnessing the power of the bike to build a more inclusive Scotland”.
